The story of Mariana Tirsa
Mariana Tirsa grew up in New Mexico, where the high desert was her first language — a landscape of brown earth, open big sky, and a particular quality of silence that never quite leaves you. She became a professional musician over two decades in Austin, where she developed the layered, atmospheric sound she brings to Runaway Horse.
Now living in the mountains of Western North Carolina, she has found a second country: the old ballad traditions of Appalachia, the folk songs that have been carried by voice alone for generations. Both landscapes live inside her writing — the earthy and the mystical, the wide open and the close-in.
As the songwriter and lead singer of Runaway Horse, Mariana writes for the space between voices. She builds her sound with other musicians, and her songs are often shaped around the duet, a female and male voice woven together, harmony as conversation. Listeners have called her music kin to Mazzy Star and Neko Case: atmospheric, spare, and impossible to put down..
